The only Waid book I read was the one where Talia accesses Batman's takedown plans for the other JLA. Thoroughly disappointing.
The current JLA book is lukewarm entertaining, in sort of an Avengers kind of way. I've read the first tpb. The Justice League used to split into teams to fight threats. It was a signature of the book. The Avengers charge en masse. This is more Avengers than JLA. That's not really a complaint so much as an observation.
But much more disppointing has been the hack elements. Solomon Grundy ripping off Tornado's human arm like a chicken wing was pure schlock. Big deal. No lasting effects and, yahoo, we get to see gore. Its not like Red Tornado now has one arm, is it? And all the cheesy legacy stuff.... if I wanted that I'd read JSA. The second arc with the Legion of Doom shows more promise.
As I said in another thread I would have been more impressed if Red Tornado had been permanently killed off, and Amazo replaced him on the team with Tornado's memories implanted in him permanently. Having a benign Amazo on the team would be like Rogue in X-men - a vehicle for interesting use of powers.
