The last two years, I haven't watched a lot of television. Sure, there are at least three shows that I will never miss seeing, in one form or another: - LOST
- Battlestar Galactica
- Doctor Who
Everything else I just see randomly when I have the time. The only time I have time to sit down and check out a show is usually when the wife and I have dinner every night. And, since it's really impossible to find anything worth watching most weeknights that isn't some crap-ass reality television, I have been using my Netflix account to accommodate this desire. Taking advantage of the fact that nearly every television show comes to DVD, I've decided to branch out and try all the shows I've either missed from the beginning, or just plain dismissed/ignored. The following are some of my thoughts, and what I have or am currently watching: 
HEROES: Season One- Oh I know. I know. Eat it up. Watch Prometheus shove his entire shoe into his mouth and gobble down some humble pie. Go to the HEROES thread and dig up every post I made denouncing this series as "I like it better when it was The 4400 or Rising Stars, etc.". I deserve it. Why?
Because I was wrong.
Now, don't get me wrong. I wouldn't be able to watch this show on network television. The first season drags on like the second season of LOST. In fact, they were about to lose me by episode six, when nothing much had actually happened.
Oh but then they picked up the ball and ran with it. And I have to say, it's damn good. It's not really the storyline itself that is the major selling point of this series. Nor is it the abilities (though those are fun). It's the actors and characters. If this show has a weak link, it's Jessica (Ali Larter) and the kid. And the convict husband. Etc, etc. Boring. And never quite picks up, I have to say.
But, Hiro! And the cheerleader! Both are DAMN excellent characters and actors. Their storylines keep me interested, and definitely make that show.
In the end, my two favorite characters and actors are Nathan Petrelli and Noah Bennet. Those guys are hard as fuck! I love the characters. Tight.
All in all, Season One is easily an 8-out-of-10. Can't wait for Season Two to hit DVD.
Jericho- A show about a small town set in a post-nuclear attack setting. Basically, it follows the whole generically modern type of story telling, where there is some very unusual/sci-fi/paranormal/disaster setting or tone or idea or mystery, but drenched in predictable characters and tv-normal settings. It's a story about a small town! (Oh, also there might have been a nuclear attack on the rest of the U.S., and some mysterious conspiracy might be at play with mysterious characters). Like the bastard evil that LOST plagued the industry with (and HEROES flirts around, as well), stories and concept is to be drawn out for as long as it takes for the viewers to realize how decompressed and fucking SLOW it all is.
I watched the first couple of episodes. Meh. I'm passing this one.
4-out-of-10.
Boston Legal: Season One- Man oh man, is the show the shit! I rarely laugh as hard or as long with any show. But Boston Legal really nails it for me. There's something about seeing Williams Shatner play a character with all of his own, personal eccentricities, quirks, and Shatnerisms. He's fucking DENNY CRANE! And I totally understand why he won an award for the show.
But...and this comes from a guy who enjoys Star Trek....James Spader owns the series. His character of Alan Shore is so meticulously crafted that it's impossible for me to describe him to any degree or expertise. Suffice to say, when he and The Shat are onscreen together, I understand why this series is still going.
And hell, I'm not even through with the first season yet.
A well-deserved 15-out-of-10

The Shield.
Jaburg and some others got me hooked on it a couple years ago. Its simply the best show on TV. All you have to do is watch the first episode and you'll be hooked. Don't waste your time with anything else until you've seen this. There's six seasons out on DVD and the seventh and final season starts in a couple months.

I was pwn3d for wanting to spank it to the hotness of Rhona Mitra?  Eureka's a really good show that's on Sci-Fi. I don't know if it's on dvd yet. worth your time. You know...I tried Eureka a few times. For some reason, I just couldn't get into it. Given the premise, you'd think it would be right up my alley. But, it was just kind of "meh" for me. I don't know. Maybe I'll give it a shot again. Of course, I think a lot of the anti-Eureka thing for me is an anti-SciFi channel for being such a suck-ass channel. They cancel SG1 so that they can keep the weak-spam-sister show SG Atlantis going? Wrestling? Crappy C-Movies? That ass-tastic 'Flash Gordon' shitfest? My god that channel blows nuts...

I'd rather pay my $13 a month and have a disc delivered to me, so I can sit down and watch it on television, as opposed to trying to download a "free" copy onto my laptop, and hope it doesn't take twelve hours to finish. They either have instant downloads (not torrents or P2P as they are hosted online), or you can watch them online, meaning with Firefox, you can download them anyway!

......where are you finding the time for all this? Easy. Every night that we actually sit down and have dinner, we just watch an episode or two of whatever show we are renting at the time. Understand, all the shows I listed as having watched has been over the past year and a half...

Dunno if everyone has this option in their state, but here there is a statewide library database, and you can select DVD's from any library in the state, they are delivered to your local library, you get a email when they come in and you keep them for a week. We get 2-3 movies a night like this. Unfotunetely they use a queing system like netflix so the neest stuff might take a few days sometimes, but collected series and such usually arrive within a day...

We have that here as well. The local library even got thousands of DVDs from a rental store that shut down. The selection is good but its still easier to use something like netflix.
