The Nail.

Marvel 1602 is an eight-issue comic book limited series published in 2003 by Marvel Comics. The limited series was written by Neil Gaiman, penciled by Andy Kubert, and digitally painted by Richard Isanove; Scott McKowen illustrated the distinctive scratchboard covers. The eight-part series takes place in a timeline where Marvel superheroes have been transplanted to the Elizabethan era; faced with the destruction of their world by a mysterious force, the heroes must fight to save their universe. Many of the early Marvel superheroes— Captain America, Nick Fury, the X-Men, and the Fantastic Four— as well as villains such as Doctor Doom and Magneto appear in various roles.
Neil Gaiman had always been a fan of Marvel, and editor Joe Quesada approached Gaiman to work on a project which eventually evolved into 1602. Upon release, the work was well-received, although some critics pointed out the Gaiman's work was a significant departure from his work The Sandman and with such high expectations the result was ultimately disappointing. Regardless, the success of the novel led to two sequels, entitled 1602: New World and Marvel 1602: Fantastick Four.



JLA: The Nail is a three-issue comic book limited series published by DC Comics. It is a self-contained story by Alan Davis which stands outside of the mainstream continuity.In this universe, the truck of Martha and Jonathan Kent has a tire puncture which is caused by a nail. This prevents them from discovering the spaceship containing the baby Kal-El, and so, there is no Superman.

The theme of the story is set by its first paragraph:

For want of a nail the shoe was lost,
for want of a shoe the horse was lost,
for want of a horse the knight was lost,
for want of a knight the battle was lost.
So it was a kingdom was lost - all for want of a nail.

The Nail. avoid the sequel, though. it's pretty but a lot of wank, storywise.

Rohjaz suck!!!!!!

I liked many of the characters in 1602 (Rohjaz and the Fantastic Four being the principal exceptions), but the ending was fan wankfest in the fine Marvel tradition.

Never read all of The Nail. Read a few pages and while the concept of a JLA with so many KIA has its appeal, never bothered to buy it.

rohjaz makes sense in a post civil war what if his side won and all supers were outlawed kinda way now... and the book was good not great....

Superior art and a satisfying ending.

It was a fucking hopeless plot device. Pissant and amateur. "Oh, its Captain America and he's travlled back through time after being shot by American facists." Fuck me dead, champagne plot line at work.

What did get me unexpectedly was Thor. I didn't see it coming and I thought the way it was handled was excellent.

also i liked it as a period peice... my major is classical history.

I actually liked the ending in 1602, though I think it would have made a lot more sense with Superman and the DCU.

You mean renaissance history or are you talking about Herodotos/ Thucydides / Quintus Curtius Rufus, Arrian, Plutarch / Xenophon for Greeks and Caesar, Pliny et al for Romans?

I don't think Cap was pretending... he had amnesia or something. Anyway, what I liked was the idea that if Cap had belonged to a different time period, since he was the catalyst for the Marvel Universe, all the other Marvel characters would have started popping up after him, which makes absolutely no sense, but it also kinda does.

He was the catalyst? I thought it was some sort of planetary self-defence mechanism to create superpowered beings of these archetypes.

No, Cap's arrival caused all the other heroes to appear after the same period of the time it took them to show up in the regular Marvel U. Since the story took place about 20 years after Cap arrived in the past, all the characters in the 1602 date from the 60's or before.

At least that's how I understood it.

I think that was Gaiman's intent, but the problem is, it doesn't really work because Cap wasn't the first Marvel character. that would be Namor. It's not like DC where Superman appeared and then the others all followed (at least in the GA. GA=Golden Age, for you all noobs). Cap didn't show up until two years after Marvel (Timely) was in full swing.

Well, Cap is probably a lot more important to the creation of the Marvel Universe than Namor is... but, yeah, it'd make a lot more sense if it was Superman.

Maybe Gaiman conceived the idea for a DC series (a sequel of sorts for the "Kal" Elseworlds!), and then took it to Marvel when he made the deal with the Donkey Fucker.

no, I understand Cap's importance to Marvel, but what I'm saying is that in some ways, it's a manufactured importance. much of it was added in after the fact, you know? later on in 60's and later decades.

whereas with Superman, it's there from the start. he's the cause of it all. that's all I'm saying.

Yep, that would make more sense indeed. Superman was in fact the catalyst for Captain America.

The Nail. Alan Davis rules. Also, 1602 was all Gaiman hype, and 8 issues of set-up with very little payoff at the end. The Nail was three issues of fun with a far superior ending.
