Dear Syd:

My puppy has the nasty habit of barking at everything, chasing his own tail, pooping in his puppy crate, and nipping at his litter mates. I've done my best to try and get him the training he needs, but nothing takes. He's also taken to licking the asses of other dogs and gagging when he cleans himself. I'd like to believe that it's not necessary to put him to sleep, but nothing I do works. What should I do with the li'l puppy?

Also, could you please post a pic of yourself that isn't distorted? Just asking...

Well, Joe it's difficult to know how to help properly as you didn't mention how old your puppy is. If he's old enough to have testicles, I suggest you get him neutered straightaway.

I had a quick Google, and came up with some info for you:

Puppy House Rules

Before you introduce your puppy into its new household tell all of your family what will be happening. Setting the rules is a must, sort out where it will be sleeping every night, who will feed it and at what times, and all other aspects of your dogs life throughout the next few weeks?

It’s important to let your dog know where they sleep at night. You can guarantee when your cute little puppy arrives everyone will want to have him/her sleep in their bed and not in the pre agreed place.

Don’t let these mistakes happen, once your puppy gets used to sleeping in a different place to its agreed bed then it will want to sleep their all the time. Make sure they sleep in their proper place every night if you want to avoid yelping and winging all night long keeping the whole house up.

Puppies may miss their mother and other puppies which may cause whining also so be prepared for that but it should reside after a few weeks of getting used to its new house.

House Training

House training your new puppy can be very difficult due to their poor bowel control, but if you follow some simple rules it will make it a lot easier.

You'll have to give away some of your time to make this process easier, you have to catch your dog in the act to be able to stop their bad behavior and train your dog to do otherwise. If you don’t catch your dog in the act then don’t punish them, they will get confused and not know what they've done wrong.

A good method for getting your dog housetrained is to always allow them to eliminate on the same surface every time, this way they will get used to the place they're allowed to go and not allowed to go. Try using paper or even scented paper to encourage your puppy to go in the correct place, placing them directly there and with no eye contact or attention if they go elsewhere.

If you have to go out and leave your dog alone, place them in a room with the same surface or paper laid down in every possible place, doing this will mean they have no other place to go apart from where you want it and your puppy will get used to the correct surface.

If you want your dog to eliminate outside then do the same but place them outside instead of in the selected area, again praising them when they go in the right place and placing them back there when they don’t.

This method takes varied amounts of time to work depending on the breed and surroundings of your dig so be patient and things will begin to change.

Stop your Puppy Chewing Everything

Ok so its day one and you’ve just brought your new cute little puppy home for the first time, all the family love its little puppy paws running around in its new surrounding. The entire family are instantly addicted to playing with the dog and all want it to sleep with them that night.

Day two comes and everything seems just as happy and playful as the previous day, except today, the puppy is slightly more used to its surroundings and gnawing and chewing on everything seems to be the new game for your puppy.

So how do you stop your dog chewing, biting, and general all round shredding of everything their little mouths can get around? Simply telling your puppy to stop and removing him from the scene, although it might help in the long run slightly, is not going to help your furniture in the short term and they’ll be straight back chewing something else.

It takes time for your new puppy to grasp the idea of what they can and cant chew to bits, chewing and biting is quite normal for a puppy and is all part of the process of teething, chewing helps the puppy cope with the soreness of the initial six months or so and is essential for a growing pup.

Nothing is out of bounds for a teething puppy, consider everything a possibility for chewing. Dogs don’t know the difference between your best pair of shoes and a battered old chew toy so it’s your job to show them. From the very beginning you need to show them right from wrong so you don’t come up against the same problem when your little puppy isn’t so little any more.

Chew toys are a great dog toy so take full advantage of them while you still have furniture left in your living room. Show your puppy that it’s good to play with that toy by rewarding him with doggy treats or something you know he likes, put this toy in front of him and in his mouth as much as possible to encourage him to chew it.


Over Excited Puppy?

Active puppys and having your puppy pounce around and run about is a common occurrence with a puppy in its new exciting surroundings.

Puppies will play and be very energetic for short periods before they have to rest before their next active spurt so the running around shouldn’t last long.

When your puppy behaves like this, respond in the opposite manner and be very calm about the whole thing. Speak calmly and slowly to your dog, and resist playing around too much to excite your dog further. If you’re calm then it will calm your puppy down too.

If you see this behaviour getting too much then try ignoring your dog by giving it no eye contact, no patting or stroking and no attention at all. Even though your puppy is only young if you treat it how to respond and act when they're young it will make it a lot easier when they get older and more destructive.


I realize you've exhausted all possibilities, but if your puppy came from an abusive background, you may have to show extra kindness and patience. After all what's not to love about puppies?
