As much as I like Elizabeth Berkeley's "body" of work, I'm more inclined to watch a muted Bound...Gina Gershon and Jennifer Tilly makes for some good watching! Or Original Sin, a shitty movie that features Angelina Jolie's deliciousness early enough in the flick that very little time needs to be invested.

I thought the PS3 was region free? Is it? I'll have to have my PS3-owning buddy try it out. Does the PS3 suffer from the same problem that the PS2 had, as far as the PS2's "troubles" with playing DVDs?

There's been no trouble with it at all. I'm still reading reviews saying that the PS3 is still the best blu-ray player around. Since it has a hard drive you can always update to the lately software and the price is still lower than most plain blu-ray players.
(I really hope nowie doesn't see this and think I like him now.)

I checked with my buddy and the PS3 is NOT all-region (at least, as far as DVDs go). So I'll just keep waiting for the Film Geek Holy Grail: All-Region Blu-Ray DVD Player that is Backwards Compatible.

You could go with an oppo player and put the foreign movies to an external drive. 
And, to be fair, one of my favorite friends there is blind and I take every opportunity available to make fun of that and we're still friends. That guy never fit there. He never got the spirit of the RKMBs. We're gonna keep an eye on the obits, see if he finally left or if he really did have a heart attack.

Thinking about it. If you aint a Star Wars fan, you at least need to go for some sort of big budget special effects movie. Something like T2, X-Men, Batman Begins, Transformers, Fifth Element or something similar. All excellent choices - I would add X2, 300 (because of the battle scenes) or either the first or last of the Die Hard movies to that list... Oh, and Mazel Tov on your first home! Once you get over the nausea of handing over a check with all those zeroes you should be fine...  It's funny. Every day that we were house hunting, up until I signed the initial offer sheet, I would get nauseous if anyone asked me about it. But after that sheet was signed and things started moving along (mortgage application, inspections, hunting for home insurance, etc), I was fine. No stomach aches. No headaches. I'm 6 days away from closing and the only thing I feel is eagerness to sign the final papers and anxiousness to get out of the apartment. Both times I bought my apartments I was the same way - once the contract was signed I was totally fine. Wait until the day of your closing and you actually have to hand the checks with those big ass numbers over - your stomach will do at least one cartwheel. But after that you can watch these movies in your new home on your new TV: Braveheart (a chick flick with a couple of good beheadings!); Gladiator (like Braveheart, the fight scenes will look cool on your kick ass tv screen); and The Matrix (the first one as the others were teh suck.)

Yeah, the PS3 has already had an update to blu ray version 2, and as most people connect them to the net, it will allow you to use the extra features on the v2 blu ray discs. I must admit, I dont really care much for blu ray at this time based on price of discs, and dont really use it for DVDs, but I have never had the synching problem that the PS2 had. I have heard though, that there are some stand alone multi region players surfacing already. I doubt they are very cheap though. At this moment in time, I would say a DVD player with HDMI upscaling is more than adequate! (I really hope nowie doesn't see this and think I like him now.) Dont worry, I still dont like you either!

Bought and watched "When Worlds Collide" today. Produced by George Pal (War of the Worlds, Destination Moon) and based on a novel by Edwin Balmer and Philip Wylie (the latter creator of The Gladiator, which inspired the creation of Superman).
