the record for one day: spidey 3 with $59 million. imma say batman tops that with $64 million for today.

Damn. Gobbo was pretty close to on the nose:

  • "The Dark Knight" set a one-day box office record with $66.4 million on opening day, Warner Bros. head of distribution Dan Fellman said Saturday.

The movie's Friday haul surpassed the previous record of $59.8 million set last year by "Spider-Man 3." "The Dark Knight" might break the opening-weekend record of $151.1 million, also held by "Spider-Man 3."

according to box office mojo, "the dark knight" has also just set the all-time opening weekend record with an estimated $155+ million

batman is now the new premier champ.

next up: titanic!

the actual opening weekend total was even higher than the estimate: $158 million

yeah but keeping a marmot, an amphibious creature in city limits isn't exactly legal.

Saw it yesterday. Awesome movie. Very dark, and daring, including the ending. Only beef is that the sound was so frigging loud. Nothing wrong with the music or the special effects, just too damn loud.

Query:

Which villain should appear in the next movie?

Should there be a Robin? Would that be plausible/fit in the dark tone of the movies?

with that one little mishapen kid from the first movie, and gordon's son in this one, its a definite concern that one of them could grow up to be a storyline robin. i think the tone of the movies is a little too grim, particularly this latest one. its certainly not something i'd like to see added. but nolan has been awesome for the first two -- so maybe he's clever enough to work out a good usage in the third movie. or, if he's only signed on for two, maybe hte new guy will throw robin in there schumacher style

i think catwoman could be a good choice for the next villain. bruce is currently without a love interest, and she's probably the next popular in the rogue hierarchy. they do then run the risk of comparisons, again, to the 90s films, and worse yet, the halle berry film.

not sure whatever villain would really fit this darker style. maybe a DKR mutant gang? having the two big guns joker and ra's come and go really sets the bar pretty high. there's not even a two-face left to continue that story more.

I think I remember Nolan (or maybe Bale. Or both) saying they refused to have a Robin.

Nolan said that its too early for a Robin. He said that if he was in a movie it wouldn't be until the fifth or sixth one of the new series. That's one of the reasons why everyone said that the little boy from the first one would turn out to be Robin.

I just got back from seeing it for the first time.

I went to a 3:30 pm matinee, thinking the theater wouldn't have that many people in it.... and it turned out it was probably 3/4 full by the time the film started. Wow. No doubt in my mind this movie is going to CONTINUE breaking records.

I won't rehash all the well-deserved love for the film that everyone here who's already seen has put forth. Great cast, great special effects, great story.

If I had to mention the one moment that gave me the geekgasm it was the scene at the end with the 'bat sonar' where they finally gave Batman opaque eye lenses! That was so FUCKING cool.

If I had one complaint, I thought they could have ditched the "blackmail subplot, and cut the film.

Finally a great big shout out to Aaron Eckert who, with all due respect to the rest of the cast, positively owned as Harvey. I knew what was going to happen to his character. Hell, I've know for approximately 35 years. But Eckert's work as Harvey was so good, I kind of sort of didn't WANT it to happen.

Why that guy isn't a bigger star is beyond me.

G-man, I'm surprised you failed to mention that the only American members of the cast were killed off while the Brits and Australian were left alive.

And yeah Eckert is a great actor. I have only seen him in this and Thank You For Smoking, but these two films alone warrant him A List status for the talent he has.

Not so, since Morgan's Freeman's character lives.

Also, if you start factoring in "real life", you can't really say the Australian was "left alive," and further, given their respective political views, I'd say Gary Oldman is more of an American than Maggie Gyllenhaal at this point. ;\)

i've been checking boxofficemojo.com a lot this week. TDK was pulling in about $20 mil every single week day after its monster premier. 20 mil is what most movies would kill for over an opening weekend, not a wednesday nearly a week after debut. so very cool.

its already surpassed batman begins box office gross, and i believe has crossed the 250 mil line before this weekend will be tallied.

Morgan Freeman was fired. And I'm counting events controlled by the film makers, not events which happened off-screen.
And last I checked his wikipedia page says:

The question was how it compared to Burton's film. That film is almost twenty years ago and ticket prices were lower. It is typical when comparing modern films to older ones to adjust the gross for inflation to determine comparative success.

If the question is whether one film's gross "exceeded" the other film's that's a comparison between the two.

Is everything okay, BSAMS? You seem a little out of it and cranky tonight.

yeah, its about 10 mil up on the 1989 batman so far (the largest of that set of 4).

however, keep in mind, dark knight cost about 185 mil to make. 89 batman cost about 35 mil.

I'm just glad you're more alert today. Hope all is well.

Anyway, back to the movie itself. Another thing that gave me a chuckle was the fact that the guy who played the Mayor was also "Bat Manuel" from the live action "Tick."

"Dark Knight" overshadows box office rivals again
(Reporting by Dean Goodman; Editing by Bill Trott)

  • Batman buried his rivals at the North American box office for a second weekend on Sunday, racing past $300 million in a record 10 days.

The Caped Crusader's blockbuster outing, "The Dark Knight," sold an estimated $75.6 million worth of tickets during the three days beginning Friday, taking its total to $314.2 million, distributor Warner Bros. Pictures said.

A week after it scored a record-breaking $158 million opening, "The Dark Knight" added a new title to its impressive list of superlatives: the best second weekend, surpassing the holiday-boosted $72 million haul of 2004's "Shrek 2."

The $180 million movie, which stars Christian Bale as Batman and late actor Heath Ledger as the anarchic Joker, has reportedly been drawing strong repeat business, and also has piqued the interest of people who avoid superhero flicks or rarely go to the movies at all.

"The Dark Knight" now ranks as the second-biggest movie of the year, just behind the $315 million haul of "Iron Man," and the 23rd-biggest of all time.

The previous speed record for a $300 million film was 16 days set by "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" in 2006. The next target is $400 million, which took "Shrek 2" 43 days to reach. Warner Bros. distribution president Dan Fellman predicted "The Dark Knight" would take just 18 days to reach that milestone.

"Where we go from there, it's uncharted waters," Fellman said.

The last movie to break $400 million was the 2006 "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie, which ranks No. 6 on the all-time list with $423 million. The 1997 epic "Titanic" leads the field with $601 million.
