Not surprised. As mentioned above, I went to a 3:30 pm matinee yesterday and the place was 3/4 full....and that was the third or forth showing of the day.

So the Life section of the USA Today today is saying that beating Titanic's 601 million is possible. It's been the fastest movie to 100 million, 200 million and 300 million and should reach 400 million in 18 days. Skrek2 hit 400 million in 43 days to give you an idea of how impressive that is. I believe Star Wars is the number 2 grossing movie at around 460 million so it should be able to beat that fairly easily.
I doubt it will break Titanic. That was a fluke that I don't think will be repeated. I want The Dark Knight to beat it but I don't think it will happen.
November 6th, 2012: Americas new Independence Day.
the new star wars films could have if they didn't concentrate so much on being bad.
this is the first film that actually has the real legs to do so. it has all the hype and franchise and star power support, plus the odd and rare little facet of being a well made movie. you can also throw in "news" as a factor, with ledger's death (spoilers!) bale's mommy beating and the self-providing story of this being "the" movie.
titanic had a run where it kept having 20 million weekends long after its debut hype. 6th sense and that fat pjp wedding movie did, as well. those are the flukes that get you into huge numbers. most of the notion is built upon repeat visits; people seeing the movie 2, 3, 4 times. so far, this seems like it can be that kinda movie, as a lot of the reports indicate people leaving thrilled and promising a return.
still, there's a loooong gap between 325 mil and star wars' second place 460, then another lo(ooo)ng game between that and 600.
If they had a scene of Leonardo DiCaprio dying a gruesome death it'd bust 600 mill without breaking a sweat. Hell, it could've got an oscar nod on that alone.
Oh don't act all suprised. Like anybody went to see Titanic to sit through a 3 hour love story on a boat.

with that one little mishapen kid from the first movie, and gordon's son in this one, its a definite concern that one of them could grow up to be a storyline robin. i think the tone of the movies is a little too grim, particularly this latest one. its certainly not something i'd like to see added. but nolan has been awesome for the first two -- so maybe he's clever enough to work out a good usage in the third movie. or, if he's only signed on for two, maybe hte new guy will throw robin in there schumacher style
I do hope Nolan will keep directing the movies, as long as he's keeping the steam. BTW, if an adult side-kick will be used then I'd prefer Nightwing.

i think catwoman could be a good choice for the next villain. bruce is currently without a love interest, and she's probably the next popular in the rogue hierarchy. they do then run the risk of comparisons, again, to the 90s films, and worse yet, the halle berry film.
Catwoman would be cool, especially if Nolan could make her different from the 66's series, and Burton's and Pitof's respective movies.

not sure whatever villain would really fit this darker style. maybe a DKR mutant gang? having the two big guns joker and ra's come and go really sets the bar pretty high. there's not even a two-face left to continue that story more.
I hope the Lasarus pit will be introduced to there will be some way to bring Ra's and Two-Face back.
Oooooh you forgot to mention Talia, Ra's daughter! She'd be awesome.

Any villain will be good as long as Nolan and Goyer are involved. Good writing can make a good movie great and that is what has happened to the first 2 Nolan Bat movies. They could use Calendar Man or this new douche Dr. Hurt and Nolan will make it cool.

To me, Catwoman seems like the obvious choice, especially with the crack that Alfred made about cats in TDK.
She's a fairly "realistic" villain and seems the one most able to fit in with the world Nolan's created so far. Make her a jewel thief/martial artist with echoes of "the Bride" from "Kill Bill" (that is, a dangerous criminal, but one with a unique code of honor).
In addition, with Batman currently an "outlaw" it could set up a nice "temptation" plotline, in which Batman is drawn to Catwoman while at the same time growing tired of being thought of as a criminal without actually being one. He could start to wonder "if they're going to call me a criminal, why not have some fun and be one?"
Furthermore, as noted above, the previous love interest is dead so there's no reason not to have Bruce find himself attracted to a mysterious, dangerous, woman.
Finally, I wouldn't worry about the presence of Catwoman drawing comparisons to the Burton films (or even the Halle Berry crapfest). Both the Joker and Two-face were in the earlier series and that didn't stop Nolan from kicking ass with both characters.

At this point, I think they have to just forget about recasting the Joker and move on to new villains. Ledger's performance is that iconic.
About the only guy who might be able to follow in Ledger's footsteps at this point is Johnny Depp, but I can't see him wanting to take the role after Ledger.

I agree it makes sense to have his face all wacked out, but not like that. It was apparently supposed to be Joker slicing his face open after getting bleached and shit. Somehow I don't see THE Joker doing that. Plus, as he has been established up to now in the comics, he's quite debonaire and especially must be if he could ever hope to attain a hottie such as Harley. That kind of physical distortion and self-mutillation does not fit with Joker's character and I will be sorely dissappointed if they resort to it.
what do you think of it now?

See, in my mind the Joker should just be absolutely horrifying. The comics with the Joker that I love are the one's where he's doing something absolutely insane for no rational reason... because there is no rationale in his mind. I'm not sure I would have a problem with the Joker mutilating himself personally... but I can see how other fans would. It's just the differences in our Joker preferences...

GOOD POINT! Um, it worked beautifully in the movie. It rolled with the whole "making it realistical" jive. There's no Joker Venom, he's not bleached, but he's still mutilated. In the comics, however, and I mean the cannon comics (I'm very interested in Lee Bermejo's upcoming book), I prefer the bleached out guy. I've put my faith in Nolan and was well rewarded for holding my decision until after watching the film.
Also, I had the wrong idea when I wrote that bit. I thought he was gonna get dunked in chemicals still.
I'm rather pleased with the resultant character.

I'm with you I was always a a big fan of the bleached Joker.....but really I can't ever see Joker any other way then what Nolan created. It makes so much more sense to have normal skin and just put a little make up on for effect. The Nolan Joker for me is the new standard.....but that is just my opinion.
By the way I am enjoying reading this thread from the beginning. I can't believe it started in 2005.
Shit, man! I been waiting for this movie since the first time I saw the last five minutes of Batman Begins!

yeah, but wasn't that before 2005? I think I remember making this thread because there weren't any and I thought too much time was passing without a thread about it.

I've heard a lot of talk about Depp becoming the next Joker, but I don't think I'd wanna see that. I think the most likely thing would be to just phase him out like they do with villains in the comic. For a few issues, villains will be lying low/injured/incapacitated/incarcerated/institutionalized until they ultimately come up with a new plan. Why wouldn't this work in the movies?
