Bring on Batman 3
by Mike Krumboltz

  • "The Dark Knight" is still on the tip of everyone's tongue. But now, instead of folks breathlessly asking each other if they've seen it, talk has turned to speculation over Batman's next foe. Who's it gonna be?

iVillage is reporting that the Caped Crusader may take on the Riddler in "Batman 3." According to the rumor mill, Johnny Depp might sign on to play the nefarious super-criminal. But caveat emptor—this could be just as false as the one about Crispin Glover playing the Joker.

Slashfilm notes that there are additional possibilities floating around. For instance, Phillip Seymour Hoffman may play the Penguin or Angelina Jolie could don Catwoman's skin-tight suit. Truth or fiction, fanboys around the world must be having a heart attack at the mere possibility.

Still, the "official" rumor mill is just one of the ways superfans are checking in on the next Batman flick. Many seek the scoop themselves. We've noticed impressive searches on "batman 3 rumors," "dark knight sequel casting rumors," and "batman's next villain."

That last query is very telling. People clearly want to know the answer, but we doubt even the filmmakers have decided. To that end, may we offer the studio execs this humble piece of Search-informed advice: Go with Catwoman. She's far-and-away the most popular baddie and there are already a slew of searches on possible cast members including Jessica Biel, Amy Adams, and, wait for it, Maggie Gyllenhaal. Do fans think Rachel Dawes, Bruce Wayne's one-and-only, was really the Catwoman all along?

Any rumours at this point are purely speculation, and totally pointless!
I doubt there is anything thats even been remotely decided yet apart from the fact Bale will be Batman.

i think catwoman is the best choice. and i wouldn't even mind having ra's return, along with talia, to have two chicks on the scene for brucie. maybe angelina as talia, and eva mendes as selina?

We are in agreement that Catwoman is probably the best choice. She has mainstream appeal and isn't "too unrealistic" for Nolan and co. to use. The Riddler wouldn't be bad, either.

But, I also think that they could bring back Two-Face. I think I read one of the producers saying that his dead/alive status was left ambiguous just in case they decided to bring him back in the third film. If nothing else, it would be great to have a sub-plot of him pushing the Batman and Gordon to the breaking point in trying to keep the wool over the people of Gotham's eyes.

I also think they may have been hinting at this when Bruce was asking if the armour would protect him from dogs, and Lucius said it would protect him from cats!

I've always said Crispin Glover would be an awesome Riddler! And yeah, Angelina as Catwoman and Eva as Talia. I see no problem with that at all. Ever...

i would still watch it with Angelina Jolie but I wouldnt be as eager too, they have had some really great villain performances and I hate to see them cast a hack in the role.

The problem with Angelina Jolie as Catwoman is that you don't then have "Catwoman" on screen, you have "Angelina Jolie in a Catwoman costume" onscreen.

One of the best things about Nolans' films has been his casting. Instead of putting obvious A-list superstars in the parts, he gives us up and coming actors (Bale, Eckhert, Ledger) or really talented character actors (Oldman), all of whom are skilled at vanishing into a role, as opposed to turning the role into a variation of their usual characters. (Note: Liam Nielson as Ras might be an exception to that rule, but even Neilsen is more of a character actor than not at this point).

Jolie would look good in the suit, and she's a decent actress and action star. However, having her as Catwoman seems more like the kind of casting that gave us Nicholson as the Joker, DeVito as Penguin and Arnold as Mr. Freeze, namely, the insertion of the "obvious superstar actor" into the part.

she has never exhibited the ability to play anything with any depth, she would be perceived as a caricature, the third movie really has to hit on all cylinders not to be considered a failure, and casting a subpar actress for a crucial role is not the way to go....

Tons of spoilers (although I think at this point, most who will read this thread know there are spoilers in it!)

. My 2 cents:

*it's weird to compare Jack's Joker to Heath's Joker. It's kind of apples and oranges. One was cartoony and funny, the other was intense and just completely nuts. Like a happy, funny drunk vs. a scary drunk. And in Jack's defense, at that point in his career and at that age, it was hard to watch him and forget he was Jack. Heath had the advantage of being much younger, and not having nearly as much of a public perception of/familiarity with him (plus he didn't have a super distinctive voice the way Jack Nicholson does). Also, I really liked Michael Keaton as Batman...a few people said he was too old to play the role, but Christian Bale is 34 and Keaton was what, in his late 30s?

*I agree that Maggie Gyllenhaal was miscast. Sure, they didn't need to get a beautiful girl to play the part...but I was distracted thinking, "Whoa, Bruce Wayne and Harvey Dent both desperately want this girl? WHY? She's not that pretty, not that interesting."

*A few people have brought up Aaron Eckhart...I thought he was excellent as well. While the Heath overdosing aspect is getting a lot of attention for the movie, to me Heath wasn't necessarily the star in the movie. I enjoyed watching Harvey Dent's "man who will save the city" thing, but then it gets twisted when Rachel dies. I thought of Christian Bale and Aaron Eckhart as having equally important parts in the movie. I actually kind of even thought Aaron Eckhart surpassed Christian Bale.

*I didn't mind the voice Christian Bale put on as Batman. To me it wasn't particularly distracting.

*With the Heath Ledger hype, let's not rewrite history...yes, his death ABSOLUTELY has gotten this movie a tremendous amount of attention. But in the months before his death, there was a lot of fanboy talk about him in the role. People were posting the first shots of him in the makeup, etc., and saying, "Oooh, Heath Ledger as the Joker, now THAT will be interesting! Wonder what he'll do with that? He was so good in Monster's Ball, etc."

*The scene with the Joker walking away from the hospital was fucking weird and creepy and funny, all at once. But the part that got to me was when he was in the car (I think it was in the police car?), sticking his head out the window while there was no sound...that made me shiver. It reminded me of what he said to Harvey in the hospital about being a dog chasing a car, but if he caught up to the car he wouldn't know what to do with it...just completely nonsensical to stick his head out the window like that, like a dog.

*The scenes towards the end with the snipers and the hostages and Morgan Freeman doing all the computer stuff to figure out what floors people were on...that was kind of disorienting. I found myself going, "Wait, what?" and trying to figure out what the hell was going on. It was going so fast. (But I'll readily admit, I don't see a whole lot of action movies because they move so fast that it's often hard to follow...I'm the asshole in the theater who's asking the friend next to me, "Wait, is that the same guy who killed the other guy in that last scene?" Haa...I think Jerry Seinfeld did a stand-up joke about that, and I am SO that moron.)

*Harvey's make up was incredibly disgusting and yet I couldn't look away.

*Yes to whoever said Bruce's gf was built like a model and not a ballerina. With those huge boobs, she was actually built more like a porn star!

Great movie.

Perfect example was the movie Alexander, which for all its faults, was a serious film.
Granted the film was pretty awful all round, but her inability to do an accent other than Russian (thats what it sounded like), and totally wooden delivery of all her lines, made for probably the worst role in the whole film.
And for my money, to be singled out in a film that is all round badness, says something.

Quite frankly, when people talk about Jolie, they rarely talk about anything other than her breasts.

they should definitely get Kevin Costner involved somehow, even if it is to play Catwoman!

Finally got around to seeing it today as every other time I planned to see it, shit happened. Really fucking good. Eckhart was A #1 Duke of New York as Dent. Great character work from everyone. Great story. The little nuances Ledger gave the Joker really rounded out the character: licking the insides of his wounds with his tongue, the look of disappointment when the Bat-line stopped his fall, his pretend prancing at the fund raiser. What I really like is that Batman is still evolving. It would have been easy to let the character continue on as he was at the end of the last movie, but this Batman is still learning and growing. He's still becoming a better hero for Gotham even to the point of sacrificing himself.

And, in a movie full of great lines, my favorite is, "Let me get this straight: You think that your client, one of the wealthiest, most powerful men in the world, is secretly a vigilante who beats criminals to a pulp with his bare hands. And your plan is to blackmail this person? Good luck."

As far as future villains, I had posted this on the Insurgent boards; but I don't know where they got off to. Easy Batman rogues to adapt to Nolan's more realistic Gotham: Firefly, Deadshot, Professor Hugo Strange, and Deathstroke the Terminator.

It tends to put you immediately at a disadvantage and IMO is a sign of true weakness.
This is true both in politics and on the internet."
